the highland park, rangeview rehearsal space/ my apt was the birth of the band and most definitely our best of times.
all the 1st songs were written and demos recorded here.
for me, the best memories of our aesthetic fetus being nurtured daily. the future was not a concern and our motivation was pure art and mostly (:} ) free expression with no expectations or rules from anyone.
pure rock made by us and FOR us.

it was so small inside that guests were regulated to floor SQuatting.

girlfriends were rarely aloud to be on our tours, yet this one ended in NYC so i lucked out and had my frauleine on board for the
non stop trek home. (turns out the waste of not playing shows while driving home was that the label (VY) had already decided to can our asses)

At a time when record company promotions knew few limits - whether financial or legal - the Rock Writers Convention, held in Memphis on May 25 and 26, 1973 still stands out as one of the most unique and colorful events of the era. Over 150 rock critics and record company representatives were flown into Memphis and put up at the Holiday Inn. While a few made an earnest effort to organize a trade association for rock writers - the ostensible reason for the gathering - most found it more worthwhile to avail themselves of the free-flowing hospitality and the local sites than to figure out how to protect their future interests from the likes of Jann Wenner.

If there were ever to be such a thing as a Rock Writer's Hall of Fame (and let's pray there never is - a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is bad enough) the list of inductees would overlap quite a bit with the guest list for the Rock Writers Convention, which included Vince Aletti, Lester Bangs, Ken Barnes, Alan Betrock, Stanley Booth, Marty Cerf, Richard Cromelin, Cameron Crowe, Ben Edmonds, Chet Flippo, Pete Frame, Simon Frith, Robot Hull, Lenny Kaye, Richard Meltzer, Richard Robinson, Bud Scoppa, Gene Sculatti, Greg Shaw, Steve Simels, Nick Tosches, and Ed Ward. Also among the attendees was one David Gest, the future ex-Mr. Liza Minelli. The Encino, California resident evidently liked Memphis well enough to establish a residence there and to this day John King is jokingly referred to as "the man who brought David Gest to town."

Big Star performed on the last night of the convention at Lafayette's Music Room. Today one might imagine a band virtually trembling in fear at the prospect of playing in front of Lester Bangs, let alone the entire assemblage, but Big Star approached the gig with a casual nothing-to-lose attitude.

Jody Stephens: I don't remember that much about anyone's personality - it was all so low-key and their writings had been so complimentary, there was nothing other than the usual intimidation of going onstage. It was also my perception, right or wrong, that we really weren't the feature band. Stax had just signed an English band called Skin Alley and there was Larry Raspberry and those were the folks that they still had a business interest in or had more recent releases. It made it easy for me anyway to step up and perform. We weren't featured - we were the underdog. Just go up and play and have a good time.

Andy Hummel: I didn't know any of those people. I didn't associate with them. It was something King said we needed to go do so we did it.

Alex Chilton: When I lived in New York I'd known a bunch of them or a few of them. Anyway, some of these people I knew fairly well. It was a gig. I don't know who preceded us on stage that night but apparently it wasn't much. We just played, did the best we could and that was that.

John King: I remember Alex was just in a particularly good mood which means everything. Everybody's playing in key. They were just happy. They were interacting with the writers and the writers were dancing even. It energized them, gave them something to go on with - some reason to put the record out and go tour.

Andy Hummel: It was far and away the most real gig we'd ever played - with real people who were there to listen to us. We didn't play out much but we played a lot - I'm guessing that we'd gotten pretty good. When you think about the progression of the band...We'd played all the way through the first LP. We'd played practice sessions for that first tour thing. We did the four-track demo so we knew how to play some songs. From a musicianship standpoint and playing together standpoint - which is extremely important - we were about as good as a band to play out as we ever were. So it was very timely that it occurred when it occurred. Jody had started singing quite a bit - he was singing backup with Alex on quite a few songs.

Richard Rosebrough: It was the gig of their lives - like watching Marc Bolan. And they were partly terrible, too. They were falling over their amplifiers and pulling their guitar chords out. It was chaos, but that's just what I heard. I think I probably walked in the back door and walked up to the sound booth with Fry and we stayed up in the sound booth and were only there for Big Star's set. We were doing our thing up there, making microphones feed back. Something happened on stage and they all said, "It's over, let's go." John turned to me in the control room and said, "Richard, do you know the last thing the captain of a sinking ship does - he sets the controls for normal operation and he jumps off." With that I turned the P.A. back on and right under the line of feeding back and goosed it a little bit. John said, "Fine let's go." We walked downstairs out the back door and got in the car and left. That's totally John.

Ripping through a set that covered much of #1 Record, several songs that would later appear on Radio City, and a few choice covers, including an impromptu take on 'The Letter,' the performance was a roaring success. What separated this gig from virtually any other was the power the audience wielded with their pens. The affinity the writers had for Big Star had been reinforced and new fans had signed up - now they needed a fresh reason to write about the band. Big Star decided to oblig

10. Acetone - Cindy (1995?)
And speaking of lost classics, this mid-’90s indie-rock album was a top favorite of me and all my friends in college, right alongside Yo La Tengo, Mr. Bungle, Ween, Velvet Underground, etc. It wasn’t until after college that it dawned on us that this album was not as famous to the rest of the world as it was to us, and although the other stuff we were into was mostly widely loved, this great one was somehow our own discovery. It’s a perfect mix of ethereal ballads and brutal garage grunge, often with a strange surf-rock gleam. Glorious vocal harmonies and whammy-bar guitar feedback. Great songs. How was this album totally overlooked and forgotten by the world? We considered it part of the pantheon, and assumed everyone else did, too. Unfortunately, Acetone’s following albums were a decreasing spiral into more and more boring, placid ballads with nary a rock song to balance it out, and one of the trio eventually commit suicide. I hope that the remaining two members of Acetone know that, at least to a few former college kids, they have a place in history in our hearts with this album.

personal note;My friend Wayne Griggs knows music. He knows all music. He's been an audiofile for many moons and is on a new project.
This man has taste.
During his years with the band Verve(from beginning to end) he was really a 5th member of the band and in my opinion much of the bands identity and songs came from Wayne's
vast LP collection. (a small later example; Bittersweet symphony)

Wayne was the DJ for the band but much more as he set the mood for the theatrics of the bands entrance and exit as well.
I would boldly say that Wayne was the bands biggest influence and of course they were all friends from the same small town of Wigan.

A throw together live radio performance (i'm guessing Texas) with some assistance from

Throughout this tour there were great impromptu moments like this with Jason or Shawn sitting in on certain tracks when the time was right. I remember in particular a version of Midnight Cowboy we did that came off Quite well.
How great to have musicians we respected highly seamlessly contribute to our beloved 3 piece.

Blue Moods brings together Miles Davis with Charles Mingus, accompanied by Elvin Jones on drums, Teddy Charles Vibes and Britt Woodman on Trombone.
Miles was fresh from his triumph at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival when he agreed to record for his old friend Charles Mingus's label. Considering the volatile temperaments of the two protagonists, the music is surprisingly calm, but according to Elvin Jones, 'if they had just printed the conversations in the studio at that time, that would have been a best-seller.' Woodman had known Mingus since boyhood, and Charles was then a frequent musical associate with similar ideas about composing and arranging. The charts here are all by Teddy, except 'Alone Together', which is by Mingus.

This is one LP out of thousands that had a profound influence on our beloved writings
during the Acetone years.

Initially, I bought this crazy kit on the whim of having a piece of Hollywood lore, yet at the same time we were always on the search of the funky. The story goes that it was bought new by Soupy Sales for his son Hunt's birthday then much later was pawned by the son during times of need.

Italian made by Meazzi and marketed as 'Hollywood' they had that early Vaudeville concept of being all racked together on wheels. This was done for easy access of 'striking' instruments with speed for the next act. In doing this the bass drum was
elevated off the floor and had no contact except for the rubber wheels. The drum was only 18" but being suspended and free to ring it sounded huge with a long tone like
a mounted tom.(a nightmare for live sound engineers always in a rush but with proper tuning and some time it was beautiful and uniQue.

I ended up using it for the 1st Vapor LP in studio but muted the kick.(for rock's sake) Also took it on tour for it's mini size and our lack of space.
This kit is amazing and I've never seen anything like it yet there must be others.
I think they were one of the first kits ever to use electronics. (It had pickups installed in the shells that went to a special Hollywood Amp.)Not mine though.

Note; I've seen some of Hollywood's short lived endorsement advertisements in dusty
bins at old school music shoppes featuring Max Roach, Billy Cobham and briefly Buddy Rich(who rumor has it hated the kit so much he kicked it off stage during a show) and others I can't remember.

Rich occasionally broke out the 'Silvertone' bass for the warmer tone than the usual 'Rickenbacker' he used for most songs.
Not to forget the 'Shobud' six string bass or tenor guitar by Gretsch.'
Never seen one like it. Used to be the name of a pedal steel but I can't find info online ....yet.

Carl Bronson, Mark Lightcap (Acetone) and Steve Goodfriend (Radar Brothers) perform as the Dick Slessig Combo. The group creates dreamy instrumental arrangements of songs from the late '60's through the early '70's. On this disc they produce a high desert evening quiet drift of the Jimmy Webb classic "Wichita Lineman" that clocks in at a calming 43 minutes. Also on this disc is a ghostly arrangement of "Guinnevere" by David Crosby. This disc is excellent.
The Dick Slessig Combo has played in art and music contexts, opening up exhibitions as well as for groups like Matmos, in the United States as well as Europe. Greil Marcus described his discovery of the Combo in one of his Salon Top 10 lists a few years back:

Directed by John Wentworth during his working as David Lynch's right hand on the 'Twin Peaks' TV series.
Note the stuffed birds and crazy Lynchian effects during the solo.(and of course the heroic rooster at the end)
Also, a bit more trivia....
See how John used the EP cover art idea (LP/UFO floating through the pool) although this time he filmed it rather than the polaroid that was the cover 'art'.
This was the pool behind my apartment where we rehearsed.

Also on 7"ep.
O.I.E was a big favorite of ours and was slated to be the opening track on 'If You Only Knew'. If I remember correct it just came down to too many tracks for the LP and it was used as a special gift for big fans on a single.
We also had plans for Ben Keith of Neil Young fame to give it his 'Tonight's The Night' pedal steel treatment, but alas.
On later recordings Greg Leisz (another big time steel man) would grace a few tracks, usually in one take.

If You Only Knew

Recording in Nashville.
Phew!
Kind of a difficult time yet we pushed on and came up with two beautiful records.
One was the previously posted EP and the other was 'If You Only Knew'.
We put some serious heartache and soul down on tape while battling some 'issues'.
The day before we left the man from the label at Vernon Yard came down to see and hear his new 'Smashing Pumpkins' for the label.
Dunno where he got this impression but let's just say he was not pleased.
We were dropped on the post release tour.
That was fine as they were Quite inept and did'nt get it anyway.
Later that year a friend of ours hooked us with Vapor Records which was a happy new home.(more later)

Having seen our live 'light show' comprised of a collection of thrifted lamps along the way, the directors went with it and added some of our rehearsal room characteristics as well. Not sure bout the milk although I do like it, alot.
Added note bout the lamps; When 1st opening for Verve in NYC we saw what a huge setup and rock light show they had and we felt we had to do.... something.An hour before the show we dashed to the local thrift and thus was the beginning of the lamps. I must say, in part it ended up spoofing Verves Classic rock lights but it really just suited our feel.
If we had our way a full living room would've been on stage.

Acetone's 1st national tour in '93 opening for label mates Verve.
The three of us cruised in a rented Cadillac and actually had a 'crew'in a combi with the mass 3 piece's gear. This ended up being the way ta go cuz it gave us the freedom to hit many stops the others wanted no part of.( Mid west thrifts, stupid tourist sites, famous rib joints etc.)
Getting to New Orleans early we jumped all over Bo Diddley's sound check where Mark's
main man signed his classic Gretsch 'Astro Jet'.
One week later in Columbus, Ohio all guitars were stolen on the one night they were'nt
brought into the rooms.
Much more retardation to come from this certain 'crew'.

One of our early songs and my favorite to this day.
Mark and Rich had never sung before writing this and it was Mark's knowledge of composition that would often put them to the test with these beautiful and difficult harmonies.
Trial by fire with some amazing results.(and some not) But to make something that sounded good to us was the plain truth.
Hawaiian music and oldies were a mere speck of what was on the turntable and therefore was amongst the influences.
You can really hear the tropical harmony especially on this song "Cindy."
Available on the 1st EP on Caroline and Hut records.1st released in in 1993.
